I just watched the Blue Man Group show in Berlin with my family.

I just watched the Blue Man Group in Berlin.

Wow. Bloody wow.

It was a solid show, with clear inspiration from the Czech "Black Light Theatre" pantomimes, and with all the things I know and love from the Complex Rock Tour DVD. Only this was up front, in person, close and impressive. The representative blue men are chosen for their scene presence and the width of their mimicry spectrum. And it shows.

But all of this is known, really. This is all things that are kinda universal for the Blue Man Group shows. What blew me away was the adaptions to a German audience. In the concert introduction to "I feel love", the disembodied voice teaching the Blue Men to become rock stars notes the importance of pulling inspiration from your peers and those who came before you; whereupon in the US version several starts with very wellknown riffs are played on the plastic tubes.

For the German version, the starts were, in order:
Mozart - Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
Nena - 99 Luftballoons
Seeed - Dickes B (modern Berlin hiphop)

And, in addition, during the Nena tune, one of the men pulled out a lighter and started waving it about, as if at a rock concert ballad; triggering the use of a big, red fire extinguisher to deal with the fire.

They were amazing. They were fantastic. They surpassed all my expectations, and made me sit in my chair and laugh until I writhed.

I really, really, really would like to see that show again.
