I bloody don't believe it. I switch my computer on - on a whim - and wheeee. BIOS locates all the drives. The computer boots. And I'm in and happy as could be.

This after several weeks of sharing computer with Susanne and procrastinating about getting support for the *bleep* box.

It's slightly annoying. I've seen the phenomenon before. If anyone could clue me in on the cause, it would be much appreciated.

Symptoms: The CD-RW and DVD aren't detected in BIOS. Subsequently, the boot process hangs, halfway through the introductory Win2k splash screen. It seems to go away after a few weeks of rest; but doesn't go away with "only" a day or two of rest.

How old is your BIOS? This sounds very similar to one of the issues I'm dealing with. It turns out that some older BIOS versions are not quite compatible with XP. Worth looking into.
