Ye Gods! I like Gin!
Aug. 19th, 2006 05:09 pmThroughout my life I have so far never had more than a small taste of any alcoholic beverage; the reason being that none of them tasted worthwhile. The arguments displayed tended not to bite - I have no interest in "learning to like" something, since I would be quite happy with grape juice, apple juice, coca cola, et.c. And I'm completely uninterested in being inebriated.
This all changed at the hands of some very nice, very good friends with completely ruthless seduction last week. We spent each night of the Leeds conference at some Pub or other - and during the second night, I got introduced to Guinness, discovering to my surprise that I liked it. The barmaid, helpfully, introduced me to Tetleys and Caffreys as well - two bitters that also taste quite good. It went on - the next day I found Humbledon, a local bitter much to my taste, as well as harder spirits: Tanqueray on the rocks (gin). Day after that, while cruising the late night life of Leeds with a large bunch of mathematicians, I found another nice gin and an absolutely wonderful ale: Plymouth on the rocks, and Monkey Wrench.
Since Monkey Wrench was so good, I downed a pint and a half in the same time I had downed half a pint the previous nights - I can drink that thingie as fast as coca cola, it really is that delicious. This together with half a shot of Plymouth (I shared with the seductress) had me slightly inebriated and growing both loud and silly once we went back.
I have yet to have a hangover, though, since I take care to pour lots and lots of water into me. Hopefully I'll be able to keep that up.
For those who know me, yes this really is me doing a complete 180 in attitude toward alcohol. It is also, for those who know me, me keeping true to my ideals and arguments when it relates to drinking. I never drank, because I knew of no drinks that would interest me, and was disinterested in searching for such. I now have no barriers to drinking in social contexts, since I know of a handful of drinks that do interest me. And there are VERY many drinks I still won't touch. I did taste at least one horrible gin, I still don't like rum, I don't see the point of cocktails, I hate wine, and a cider has to be DAMNED good before I'll drink it.
