My doctoral thesis just got mailed to the university press. I'll go there myself on Monday to pick out cover design and talk through the delivery with them.

Holy ****. I'm done.

WTF? Isn't that supposed to take four - five years? Or often, more like eight to fifteen ...?

Congratulations!

That depends on what you've done before the PhD studies, and what you do meanwhile. The PhD thesis itself takes about two years in Sweden too, including the research for it and some time for teaching and such. The first two years of a customary four year PhD programme in Sweden consist of the Lic thesis, which is a separate project from the PhD thesis (even though they're usually on the same subject).

Those who spend eight or fifteen years do a lot of fluff on the side, like working.

US PhDs are a lot longer than anyone else's, AFAICT. UK PhDs are 3-4 years, and you have to submit something by the end of four years - a friend of mine just submitted hers on (4yrs - 1 day).
