Horrible horrible handling of whisky

I went to a bar yesterday evening with some friends. A very .. hip bar. We're talking SERIOUS meat market hip people bar.
So, I went to the counter and tried to figure out what I wanted to drink. All the people around me were having Whiskey Sours on Jack Daniels - which is a road I Will Not Walk, so I contemplated a Caipiroshka while studying the bar lineup.
And then I saw first Laphroaig and then Talisker high up on the wall. And my choice was done.
So, once the barmaid came along my way, I order "A Talisker, neat, and a glass of water, please!"
"What? Just the whisky on ice???"
And here it dawned to me that they must not serve very many single malts at this place....
"NO! NO ICE! Just the whisky!!!"
She went to arrange my glass. Filled it with ice. Looked at it. Did a double take. And then emptied it of ice, leaving a watery residue in the glass. *grumble*
Then she went to ask her colleague where they keep their Talisker. He waved vaguely at the wall, and she stared for another half minute or so until she could locate it.
And then I got my drinks.
But these people ... they must never have occasion to serve a proper single malt. Not the way this was done.

Date: 2007-10-01 11:28 am (UTC)A bit of water in whisky is acceptable - indeed, some people ask for it, and proper whisky pubs often give you a jug of water so you can water to taste. Though I suppose giving you water when you wanted it neat isn't very good at all. Ice is, of course, Right Out.
